Minds Eye Arts Group boosts confidence and connection for neurodivergent young people in Forres

We are delighted to share early results from the Minds Eye Arts Group, a new creative programme for neurodivergent children and young people and their families, funded by the Newbold Legacy Trust. Based at Auchernack House in Forres, the project offers a calm, sensory‑friendly space for creative exploration, self‑expression and social connection.

Since launching in November 2025, the group has grown from an initial cohort of 5 children to a regular group of 8, with up to 10 attending some sessions. Workshops run in term‑time blocks and are led by artist‑facilitator Kate Mackay.

Our interim evaluation shows a 23 per cent increase in overall engagement and participation across all children, with no areas of regression. Observations highlight notable gains in creative confidence, willingness to try new techniques, and pride in completed artwork, alongside improvements in focus, frustration management and social interaction.

The adapted venue includes reduced visual and auditory stimulation, clear signage and a cosy breakout room with cushions and blankets to support sensory comfort. Parents have commented on the calm, contented atmosphere and the visible difference the sessions make both to their children and to their own sense of relief and support.

Feedback from participants describes the sessions as fun, social and creatively stimulating, with one young person sharing that they enjoyed being able to “make my own inventions”. Parents have valued the small group size, flexible structure and the way each child can find their own level and build on peers’ ideas.

The Minds Eye Arts Group will continue through spring 2026, with further term blocks scheduled from 25 April to 23 May. Places are limited and offered on a pre‑registration basis to ensure the group remains safe, supportive and responsive to individual needs.
